My research explores the use and application of environmental DNA to study the deep-sea environment. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a non-invasive sampling approach that involves capturing genetic material left behind in the environment to elucidate the biodiversity of a given area without the direct collection of individual organisms. For my research I will primarily be focused on using eDNA to investigate community patterns and shifts of in vertically migrating organisms in the Gulf of Mexico. Beyond research, I am deeply passionate about teaching and mentoring. I hope that through this work, I will also be able to create opportunities to expose and uplift other students in the field of deep-sea biology and genomics.
