I am formerly a laboratory technician in Dr. Kevin Boswell’s lab. My primary role was to collect and process active acoustic data on greater amberjack in the Gulf of Mexico. I stayed in Dr. Boswell’s lab to pursue my master’s degree in biology. The study I am working on is our permit project. For the past three years, we have been collecting data on the predator-prey relationship between permit and sharks in the Florida Keys. My goal is to introduce a genetic component to the project. I will be using fin clips collected for the past three years, along with new clips taken around the state of Florida to better understand the genetic connectivity of permit throughout central and south Florida. As one of the most important sport fishes, better understanding the population structure, movement, and predator-prey relationships of permit will help us to properly manage their populations.
